Shopify B2B & the wholesale channel

Best Shopify Wholesale Apps: How to Judge Them Yourself

By Martin Mecar, founderJuly 21, 20266 min read

The best Shopify wholesale app is the one that solves the specific job you have, survives your next theme change, and lets you take your pricing data out again. That is a short list of criteria and it eliminates most candidates faster than reading reviews does.

What follows is a scorecard rather than a ranking. App listings move, features get added and retired, and a recommendation written today would mislead you next season. The checks below have stayed true across every wholesale build worth copying, and you can apply them in an afternoon.

Start by naming the job

Before comparing anything, write one sentence describing what has to stop being manual. If you cannot write that sentence, you are shopping rather than solving.

Real versions of that sentence: stockists should be able to reorder without emailing us. Two price tiers should apply automatically instead of being typed into draft orders. Accounts on net 30 should get an invoice without anyone remembering to send one. Reps should enter market orders on the account's own pricing.

Each of those points at a different category of app, and the categories do not substitute for each other — the map is in the five categories of B2B apps. A portal will not fix your invoicing. A pricing layer will not make your catalog faster to order from.

If your sentence is something like we want to look more professional to buyers, the answer is a better line sheet, not an app.

The eleven checks

Run these against any candidate. A no on any of the first four should end the evaluation.

Where is the final price decided? In the theme, in the cart, or at checkout. You want the answer to include checkout, because a price that is only correct in the cart can be wrong on the order the buyer receives. Ask directly and be sceptical of a non-answer.

Does it use theme app extensions or edit theme files? Extensions survive theme changes; direct edits do not. If the install instructions ask you to paste code into a Liquid file, write down exactly what you pasted and where, because future you will need it.

Can an account be marked tax-exempt? Resale certificates are normal in wholesale. An app that cannot suppress sales tax for a trade account leaves you editing every order by hand, which defeats the purpose.

Can it override consumer shipping rules? Your included-shipping threshold was designed for a sixty-dollar consumer order. Applied to a 2,400-dollar wholesale order it gives away freight. The app needs to let trade accounts use flat rates, freight quotes, or shipping billed later.

Can you export price lists and account assignments? Every brand eventually changes tools. If your wholesale pricing lives only inside an app with no export, moving becomes a manual re-entry project.

Does it enforce minimums both ways? Order-value minimums and per-SKU quantity increments are different rules and you need both. Minimum value alone lets a buyer order one of everything and break twelve cases. The logic is in quantity rules.

How does it handle promotions? Test whether a sitewide consumer offer stacks on top of wholesale pricing. If it does, and there is no exclusion, you will eventually run a seasonal campaign that quietly discounts your trade accounts.

What does a logged-out visitor see? Open the storefront in a private window after installing. Any page that renders a trade price without a session is a page that can be indexed and screenshotted.

Does it conflict with anything already installed? Two apps deciding prices in one cart is the most reliable way to charge a buyer the wrong amount. If you already run a pricing app, a portal that also prices is a replacement, not an addition.

What happens if the app is uninstalled? Some leave orphaned metafields, hidden products or theme code behind. Ask, and check your product count afterwards.

Is support answered by someone who understands wholesale? Write a pre-sales question with a real scenario — case of six, net 30, tax-exempt, three locations — and judge the reply. It predicts what the second week of your build will feel like.

The trial that actually proves it

Installing and clicking around proves nothing. Run this sequence instead, on a hidden test product and a test customer, before any real buyer touches it.

Create a test company or tagged customer at your wholesale tier. Add the test product to the cart at a quantity below your minimum and confirm it is blocked. Raise it to a valid increment and confirm the price shown matches your price list exactly, including the cents.

Proceed to checkout and confirm the price is still correct there. This is where most failures surface. Confirm tax is handled as you expect. Confirm shipping is the trade treatment rather than your consumer rates.

Complete the order. Check how it appears in your admin: is it identifiable as wholesale, does it carry the account, does it deduct from the same inventory as consumer sales. Then check your reporting — can you separate wholesale revenue from retail revenue without an export.

Finally, log out and view the same product in a private window. Retail price, no trade information, nothing in the page source that should not be there.

An app that passes that sequence will handle your first fifty orders. One that fails any step will fail it publicly, in front of a buyer, during a week when you are busy.

What price should not decide

Monthly cost is the least useful comparison point, because the range between the cheapest and most capable option is usually smaller than the value of one wholesale order handled correctly. Two costs matter more.

Setup time, measured honestly. An app that takes a weekend to configure has consumed a weekend you could have spent on outreach. Ask how long the catalog import takes for your SKU count.

Switching cost later. This is the one brands consistently underweight. The app that locks your pricing inside itself is expensive at any monthly rate, because the bill arrives as a migration eighteen months from now.

Before you install anything, check the channel is real

The most common mistake is not choosing the wrong app. It is choosing an app before there is anything to automate.

Wholesale infrastructure pays back when it removes repeated work. Ten accounts reordering three times a year is thirty orders — under eight hours of manual admin annually. No app improves that meaningfully. The reason to build is that the accounts exist and are multiplying.

If they do not yet, the work is finding buyers. Paste a product link into WholesalePilot and the preview shows the kinds of shops, distributors and chains that would plausibly carry something like it, which is a faster read on whether the channel is worth infrastructure than any app trial. The manual path that gets you there is in B2B without Plus.

Questions brands ask when choosing

Are the highest-rated apps the safest choice? Ratings skew toward install volume and toward brands whose needs are simpler than yours. A five-star app that cannot mark an account tax-exempt is still wrong for you. Judge against your own sentence from the first section.

Should I pick an all-in-one or several focused tools? All-in-one, where it genuinely covers your jobs, because every integration point is a place prices can disagree. Focused tools only when the jobs are genuinely separate — pricing and rep ordering, for example.

What if I might upgrade to native B2B later? Then weight the export check heavily and avoid anything that requires deep theme edits. Migrating from an app to native pricing means removing the app entirely, not running both.

Does any of this change on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix or Squarespace? The checks transfer unchanged. On BigCommerce the pricing job is often already covered by customer groups and price lists natively, so start there rather than with a plugin. On Wix and Squarespace expect to rely more on a portal, and weight the export check higher still.

How long before I know whether it was the right choice? One full reorder cycle with real accounts. If your stockists reorder quarterly, that is a quarter, which is another argument for not installing anything until the orders justify it.
